Overview

These are the stories behind the unique and iconic buildings that have shaped San Antonio-and the people who created them-helping it to become America's seventh-largest city. From the tallest skyscraper in Texas to the largest wildlife land bridge in the United States, construction over the past 100 years has established the Alamo City as a leader in architectural innovation and building technology. Authors Doug and Michele McMurry provide an insightful and entertaining narrative, drawing from archived material and long-forgotten historic documents, as well as the personal recollections of the men and women whose families pioneered the growth of Texas' most unique city.

"""100 Years of Building San Antonio is a sweeping chronicle of San Antonio's modern physical profile with gems of anecdotes and historical details about the construction companies and the workers who built the famous buildings, decade by decade."" - Stephen Amberg, Ph.D., The University of Texas at San Antonio ""Doug and Michele have written a great book about the major building projects in San Antonio over the last hundred years. Building for the future drives our local economy and, in this book, they have captured the major projects that have positioned San Antonio as a fast-growing economy."" - Nelson Wolff, Bexar County Judge 2001-2022 ""A City can be defined by its buildings, as well as its people. This book centers on brick-and-mortar construction, but also contains a goodly amount of history of the people who built the buildings, and the history surrounding why they were built. It also relates the occasional controversy that surrounds great projects. It's all mighty interesting. After you have read this book, you will know many things about San Antonio that you did not know before. I know I did, and recommend you do the same."" - Phil Hardberger, Mayor of San Antonio 2005-2009 Praise for 100 Years of Building San Antonio ""Doug and Michele's narrative is a splendid journey that connects iconic landmarks to the builders whose artistry created our distinct and unique City."" - Richard Perez, President & CEO, San Antonio Chamber of Commerce ""Doug and Michele McMurry artfully weave the stories of San Antonio's familiar and famous places as they chronicle our city's development over the last century."" - Torrey Stanley Carleton, Hon.
