Tom writes: I know what you're thinking. What the hell kind of book must this be with a title like that? I'll tell you what it is - one of the best goddamn graphic novels with superheroes out there. Why is it one of the best you ask? Because this is a superhero book with smarts. The mutant race is on the brink of extinction and their enemies know this and the only good defence is a killer offense and no one knows this better then Wolverine. This isn't your Hugh Jackman Hollywood pretty boy; this is the real Wolverine - a broken man who is the best there is at what he does and what he does ain't pretty. He has assembled an assassination squad made up of equally unbalanced mutant antiheroes. Because even though the mutant race is dying out there happens to be no shortage of unbalanced antiheroes! Their first mission is stop the rebirth of the mutant death god named Apocalypse (funnily enough) But this time he has taken a new form, one that X-Force and the reader would not expect making him not so easy to kill after all. The moral dilemma facing X-Force in this book would become the narrative driving force that made it a critical and commercial hit from the get go and was the must read X-Men book published by Marvel. Author Rick Remender took what seemed like an oddball cast and makes it work in a way that has you thinking "This makes perfect sense! The the banter between Deadpool and Wolverine or the flirtation between Psylocke and Fantomex are just as fun to read as all the battles to the death that are taking place on the moon. Yes, you read that right - the moon! After all, where else would a madman bent on death keep his evil lair? Artist Jerome OPena relishes in this madness his expressive art captures the humour as well as the horror when appropriate. Colour artist Dean White's palette leaves nothing to be desired, his artistic choices are shrewd as they never overpower a scene no matter how over the top the situation may be so it never comes across as gaudy. Nor is it so dull in it's realism that you are wanting to pick up something else to read. This book is sheer creative madness run amok, it's that lightning in a bottle effect that comes from a real artistic collaboration that cannot be mimcked only celebrated.
