The world knew him as the Hermit of Gully Lake, a lean and bearded elderly man in rags who lived on his own for more than half a century in the deep woods wilderness of northern Nova Scotia. Joan Baxter is an award&#8212winning Nova Scotian author who lives in Tatamagouche Nova Scotia. She has worked for the BBC World Service, the CBC, Associated Press and many other news media. Her book, The Mill: Fifty Years of Pulp and Protest, drew international attention to an environmental tragedy in her home province. She is a past winner of The Evelyn Richardson Award.
