OverviewJohn Charles Ryle was an evangelical Anglican clergyman during the mid-1800s, eventually earning the title of first Bishop of Liverpool. He hadn't originally set out for a life of piety, however. Educated at Eton and the University of Oxford, he had sights on parliament, but was derailed from his plans and became curate at Exbury, Hampshire after taking holy orders. The Cross is composed of the author's contemplation of the Apostle Paul and his life, the nature of glory, and his relationship to the cross of Christ.
