This proceeding took place in September, 1833. Mr. Taney, then attorney-general, was next appointed Secretary of the Treasury, who made the order as resolved upon by the Cabinet paper which President Jackson refused to submit to the Senate after being requested, by a formal resolution of that body, to communicate a copy. He would not recognise the authority of the Senate to inquire into or supervise his Cabinet consultations.
