After four years in the United State military, then traveling independently, he entered the field of restoration ecology, working as the first natural areas ecologist in Central Park and as Director of the Schuylkill Valley Nature Center in Philadelphia. He founded the Society for Ecological Restoration - Mid Atlantic Chapter in 2005, taught at Temple and Philadelphia Universities, and lectured and presented at various conferences and symposia including City College of New York, University of Maryland, University of Connecticut, and Pennsylvania State College. He has authored and co-authored many articles and research papers on ecology and the environment. Dennis is currently a restoration ecologist with New York City Parks Department.
