Hayek on Hayek: An Autobiographical Dialogue

Overview

In the last two decades Hayek's reputation has undergone a remarkable revival, and he is now rightly regarded as one of the greatest economists, political philosophers and social theorists of the century. However not only did he not write an autobiography, his appointed biographer, W.W. Bartley, died before that work was complete. Drawing on Hayek's extensive autobiographical notes and the many lengthy interviews he gave towards the end of this career, Hayek on Hayek traces his life's work in his own words. The result is the most alive and accessible introduction to Hayek to date. Hayek on Hayek follows its subject from his early years in the Vienna circle, to the United States, where he completed his seminal research on business cycles, and, at Lionel Robbins' invitation to the LSE. It was here that Hayek was to take part in the two debates, first with Keynes then with the Socialists, that were to shape his future career and the reception to his work. At the time he appeared to have had the worst of both debates, and his reputation was to suffer something of an eclipse. More than fifty years later it was apparent that there was a need for a re-assessment. Throughout the development of his ideas is linked to the events and experiences of the past century to which his ideas responded, and out of which they emerged. On the surface Hayek's work shows an amazing diversity, addressing law and psychology as well as economics and political philosophy, but the continuity and steady evolution of his ideas is here captured in the uniqueness of his own voice.
