Overview

In a lengthy conversation with Francesco Zanot, Guido Guidi looks back over his artistic career, from his beginnings in design and his architectural studies, to his subsequent collaboration with some of the worlds most famous museums. Author of precise and rational images, the photographer here recounts the genesis of his work and its principal points of reference, broadening the discussion in directions apparently distant and unrelated, ranging from Zen philosophy to Renaissance painting, from Surrealism to contemporary theatre. The book, organized on the basis of key themes in Guidis investigation, thus unfolds in a series of cross-references and influences, overlaps and quotations, in the conviction that no discipline, and in particular photography, can exist independently of any other. The tone of the discussion is apparently light, marked by the rhythm of memories and brief anecdotes, since, like the rest of his work, the substance of Guidis words does not lie on the surface, but comes from a remarkable depth. Francesco Zanot, photography critic and curator, has worked on exhibitions and publications with some of the most prominent photographers on the international scene, such as Alec Soth, Takashi Homma, Charlotte Dumas, Linda Fregni Nagler, Olivo Barbieri, Luigi Ghirri, and many others. Currently director of the Master in Photography and Visual Design organized by Forma, Foundation for Photography and NABA in Milan, he is Curator at Camera, Italian Center for Photography, Turin, as well as an associate editor of Fantom Photographic Quarterly. Guido Guidi (Cesena, Italy, 1941) started taking pictures in 1956 and continuously in 1966. Since 1989 he has taught Photography at Accademia di Belle Arti in Ravenna. Since 2001 he has taught at the Design e Art faculty in Venice. He presented his work at the Guggenheim and Whitney museums in New York, at Centre Pompidou in Paris, at the Venice Biennial and at Canadian Centre for Architecture in Montreal. Among his latest publications: Fiume, Fantombooks, Milan, 2010; A New Map of Italy, Washington, DC: Loosestrife Editions 2011; Guido Guidi, Carlo Scarpa, Tomba Brion, Ostfildern: Hatje Cantz, 2011. He appears in the collections of the Centre Pompidou in Paris, of the Canadian Centre for Architecture in Montreal, of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Photography for Guidi is something autobiographical. It is synonymous with inhabiting, and the camera is the instrument that allows him to observe, appropriate and collect what lies beyond his doorstep.

"Photography critic and curator, Francesco Zanot has worked on exhibitions and publications with some of the most prominent photographers on the international scene, such as Alec Soth, Takashi Homma, Charlotte Dumas, Linda Fregni Nagler, Olivo Barbieri, Luigi Ghirri, and many others. Currently director of the Master in Photography and Visual Design organized by Forma, Foundation for Photography and NABA in Milan, he is Curator at Camera, Italian Center for Photography, Turin, as well as an associate editor of Fantom - Photographic Quarterly. Italian photographer, Guido Guidi began experimenting in the late 1960s with pseudo-documentary images that interrogated photography's objectivity. Influenced by Neorealist film and Conceptual art, in the 1970s he began investigating Italy's man-altered landscape. Working in marginal and decayed spaces with a (8""�10"") camera, Guidi creates dense sequences intended as meditations on the meaning of landscape, photography, and seeing. Later he investigated the life and death of modernist architecture, with projects on Scarpa, van der Rohe, and Le Corbusier. Photography for Guidi is something autobiographical. It is synonymous with inhabiting, and the camera is the instrument that allows him to observe, appropriate and collect what lies beyond his doorstep."
