Reviews

Crime in the British countryside is the theme of the latest anthology of stories compiled by The Crime Writers' Association. 20 short stories, most of which were written specifically for this publication, reflect the broad range of contemporary British crime fiction, with accomplished writers such as Robert Barnard and Ruth Rendell spinning their yarns alongside talented newcomers to the genre. The result is a sometimes patchy but always entertaining overview of the darker elements of our green and pleasant land, focussing on the menacing undercurrents of respectable country living with, it must be said, a fair share of 'townies' being responsible for disturbing innocent rural types. Murder, blackmail and strains of the occult wind their way through freshly ploughed fields and sleepy country pubs, and no-one, from the hard-nosed detective to the naive farm labourer, the London gumshoe to the village grocer, can be presumed innocent. A real treat for aficianados of British mystery writing, as most of these stories are unavailable elsewhere. (Kirkus UK)
