Overview

Back in grade five, Bridge, Tabitha and Emily made a pact. Never to fight, ever. Now, two years later, they're still best friends, but other things are changing. Bridge meets Sherm, and is soon excited and confused by her new, strange feelings. And when Emily starts texting pictures of herself to Patrick, Bridge and Tab find themselves complicit in a naive plan that quickly spirals out of control. And while the three friends navigate the challenges of their changing friendship, another story-of betrayal and remorse-keeps you guessing until the very end. Goodbye Stranger is a tender and intricate story about friendships, and love, and the pain of sometimes making the wrong choices.

Reviews

'In this taut novel, every word, every sentence, has meaning and substance.' New York Times Book Review on When You Reach Me 'It is the true gift of the storyteller to take such age old themes and issues and shine a light on them in such a way that it appears brand new.' Magpies on When You Reach Me 'Secrets and lies are crafted and planted adeptly...This original story resembles the dots in a pointillist painting, where placement of colours tricks the eye into seeing other colours, and a true picture can be seen only from farther way.' Weekend Australian on Liar & Spy 'Rebecca Stead does first person so well, emulating the wandering mind of the main protagonist as she deftly weaves a story from his thoughts and interactions...The construction of this story is masterful, the plot pacing and revelations perfect...It is both an affirming story and simply a joy to read.' Magpies on Liar & Spy 'Exactly what I would have wanted to read in my early teens. It feels sophisticated and clever and knowing without being too grown-up and dark.' Guardian on Liar & Spy 'This intelligent novel is a joy to read.' Independent on Liar & Spy 'A skillful tale...Despite its light touch, it contains important themes about the truths we tell ourselves.' Sunday Times on Liar & Spy 'This memorable story about female friendships, silly bets, different kinds of love, and bad decisions is authentic in detail and emotion-another Stead hallmark.' STARRED Review, Publishers Weekly '[Stead] captures the stomach-churning moments of a misstep or an unplanned betrayal and reworks these events with grace, humour, and polish into possibilities for kindness and redemption. Superb.' STARRED Review, Kirkus 'Stead shows how strongly love of all kinds can smooth the juddering path toward adulthood. Winsome, bighearted, and altogether rewarding.' STARRED Review, Booklist '[Stead's writing is] filled with humor, delightful coincidences, and the sorts of things...that escalate in ways that can seem life-shattering to a 13-year-old. The author keeps all her balls in the air until she catches them safely with ineffable grace.' STARRED Review, School Library Journal '[Stead] looks at life in funny and profound ways that will allow young readers to come to these questions from multiple entry points, no matter where they are on their own journeys.'
