Thunderhead

By Miranda Darling

A Mrs Dalloway for the supermarkets and range rovers of the eastern suburbs, Darling subverts domesticity through either intense satire or a brilliant commentary (both, definitely both) and highlights the deal that women make with themselves to survive. It had me snorting with laughter (I, too, do not like the springy modernity of trainers. I hate them.) and is a book that people with either love or hate, and that demands to be read in a fever dream rush. This is honestly everything I want in a book.

BLACK DUCK

April ILF Book of the Month

Black Duck: A Year at Yumburra

By Bruce Pascoe

It is impossible to read Black Duck without having Dark Emu in your periphery. Pascoe truly changed the nation with his research, and this touching memoir brings us to the land that gave him such prominence. Along with Lyn Harwood, he advocates for “treating Australia like herself,” discussing the overwhelming benefits of Indigenous agriculture and land preservation. Moreso, he poignantly delves into the communal effect of losing a leader, the devastating toll of bushfires and the inordinate toll of challenging the pre-eminent thought. It is fair to say Pascoe has been dragged by Australian media, but I personally felt like this memoir gave an acute insight into his true character. Whatever you think of Pascoe, this is more than worth a read.

The Miraculous Sweetmakers Frost Fair

By Natasha Hastingsan

When I was little, I remember gravitating towards books with adventure, magic and detailed world-building as well as captivating tales that were imaginative in their scope and that didn't underestimate my intelligence as a young reader. Books like Inkheart by Cornelia Funke, The Shadow Thief by Alexandra Ardornetto and A Fox Called Sorrow by Isobelle Carmody did just that. Now, in adulthood, The Miraculous Sweetmakers scratched an itch I didn't realise I had - it plunged me back into feelings of wonder, awe and childlike excitement within an intriguing and delightful fantasy world. Its descriptions were luscious and cosy, its characters were beyond loveable and the plot was a genuine page-turner! I would absolutely recommend The Miraculous Sweetmakers for readers aged 9+
