OverviewGermany's first bombing raid on London's unprepared civilians in the winter of 1940 lasted for nine hours, and had been intended to break the morale of the British people. It failed. The Luftwaffe then extended its attacks to Britain's ports, industrial centers and provincial towns, and with appalling loss of life, injury and destruction of property. A semblance of everyday life continued, however, with a determination that is difficult to absorb today. Frank and Joan Shaw have gathered together this collection of accounts as their tribute to the courage and endurance of some of those who experienced the raids, and who might otherwise have gone without the recognition they deserve.
