In hoc libro, Publius Vergilius Maro tragicam historiam Didonis, reginae Carthaginis, et Aeneae, herois Troiani, summa arte depingit. Narratio incipit cum Aeneas, fati necessitate impulsus, ad litora Africae pervenit, ubi Dido eum magno hospitio excipit et amore flagranti capitur. Tamen, monitu deorum et officio erga futuram Romam, Aeneas e Carthagine discedere cogitur, quod ad finem lugubrem reginae ducit. Hic quartus liber ""Aeneidos"" non solum certamen inter amorem privatum et officium publicum (pietas) explorat, sed etiam profundam humanitatem et dolorem personarum manifestat.
