Overview"Portland, Oregon artist, Betty Chilstrom, ""Painted the Town"" during the second half of the 20th century. The character of a city is made up of many things, including its history and neighborhood vitality. Living through the great depression, homeless throughout her childhood, Betty had a keen appreciation for the value of a Home Place, and Portland became her permanent home during World War II. Living in the same Buckman neighborhood home for seventy years, she spent 40 years chronicling Portland's historic homes, architecture, and cityscapes, before urban renewal swept them away. Told by her youngest daughter, artist Robin Chilstrom, this is the story of Betty's life, her evolution as a self-taught artist, and how she came to create the stunning and prolific archive of over 250 paintings and drawings contained in this book, during her Love Affair with the City." Table of ContentsReviewsThis captivating publication brings together a magnificent selection of the body of work of the artist Betty Chilstrom. . . To me this work is a triumph: revealing the arc of a great artist's life, in its execution and design, and in shining a vivid light on the architectural beauty of Portland. Randal Stuart, Founder & Artistic Director, Cerimon House. Author InformationRobin Chilstrom has been a multi-disciplinary community artist in Portland, Oregon since 1971. She has worked professionally as a performer, visual artist, and arts educator. In the early years, she collaborated with other theater artists to create and perform original work, most notably at Portland's Storefront Theater. As a musician and vocalist she toured nationally with the women's music ensemble, Izquierda. Later, she started her own business as a sculptural costumer, creating unique costumes for companies like Nike and Hanna Andersson. Also during the 1980's, she trained to work with special needs children as part of an education team. The training included an educator's course with renowned improvisational theater teacher, Viola Spolin. It was during this time that she developed and began to share Voiceweaving, a vocal improvisation form for small groups. By 1990, she was working as a designer and sculptor for SCI, national builder of exhibits, theater sets and parade floats while also teaching Voiceweaving at the Dreams Well Studio, a haven for experimental theater art. In 2003 she co-founded Earth Arts NW, a regional environmental arts education program for children and adults. Over the years, she collaborated with thousands of children to create stories and art that honors the natural world. Today she continues to write and illustrate stories, co-create songs in community, and share Voiceweaving as broadly as possible.
