Bruno has been hit hard by the GFC, and as a result decides to travel to Ireland to trace his familial roots, if Obama doesn't win, he decides, he's not going back. Addie is a woman at a loose end, going through the motions of life until she meets Bruno. It's love at (almost) first sight, the kind of love that we all spend our lives trying to catch, the kind of love that you cannot recover from. The premise is a simple one, boy meets girl, but written with such dexterity and sincerity that it becomes one of those books that gives you pause. Kathleen MacMahon is a celebrated journalist, who was paid a whopping 684,000 euro advance for her debut novel, which then went onto become the toast of the London Book Fair this April. What I enjoyed most about this book was its honesty. Addie is a middle aged woman who has given up on finding love, her sister Della is a sometimes unsatisfied mother, and their father is an old school doctor staring down the barrel of being redundant in both his family and work life. Each of these characters wound their way into my heart, causing real pain at certain points. The situations and journeys travelled are universal - I challenge anyone to read this and not feel something.
