OverviewIoan Petru Culianu (1950-1991) is widely recognized as a leading scholar of Gnosticism, early Christianity, and the Renaissance. Yet his intellectual ambitions extended far beyond Religious Studies or the History of Ideas. Culianu consistently sought integrative models capable of explaining the dynamics of Religion, Science, and Philosophy within a unified theoretical framework. His explorations led him toward emerging scientific paradigms, including Mandelbrot's theory of fractals, in his attempt to articulate a general science of the imagination. Culianu did not live long enough to fully elaborate these intuitions-intuitions that remain strikingly fertile-or to encounter a later development in physics and thermodynamics: the Constructal Law. Had he lived longer, this theory would likely have provided precisely the conceptual architecture he was seeking. This book, the outcome of eighteen months of postdoctoral research, offers a systematic analysis of Culianu's oeuvre with the aim of clarifying the foundations and implications of his theoretical project. Its final chapter also examines the Constructal Law and explores its potential applications within the field of Religious Studies. This second edition, revised and expanded, incorporates new insights, updated scholarship, and additional sections that further refine the interpretive framework proposed in the first edition, offering readers a more comprehensive understanding of Culianu's intellectual legacy.
