Overview

As a collection of eight contributions drawing on full-fledged SFL to translation studies, the book includes studies that centre on the theoretical and methodological framework, with instances of translation between different languages being treated as illustrations of phenomena that arise in translation rather than as empirical evidence forming part of a large-scale study. Arranged chronologically to reflect the development of ideas, the eight chapters are all written by Halliday and Matthiessen and are based on Hallidayan SFL rather than other ""variants"" of SFL. The chapters can all be characterized as text-based, meaning-oriented, system-oriented and metafunctional. They involve different aspects of language operating in context of culture, serving to explore the notion of translation as recreation of meaning in context.

Author Information

Bo Wang is Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at the University of Macau, China. Yuanyi Ma received her doctoral degree from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Her research interests include systemic functional linguistics, translation studies, discourse analysis, and language description. She is co-author of Lao She’s Teahouse and Its Two English Translations (Routledge), Translating Tagore’s Stray Birds into Chinese (Routledge) and Systemic Functional Insights on Language and Linguistics (Springer). She is an independent researcher in China. Christian M.I.M. Matthiessen is a distinguished professor in the Department of Linguistics at the University of International Business and Economics, as well as distinguished professor of linguistics at Hunan University, guest professor at Beijing Science and Technology University, and honorary professor at the Australian National University.
