Overview

Nothing that touches Columbus can be clean and diaphanous, writes Juan Gil in a luminous monograph on Columbian myths. It seems that it should not be so. Columbus is one of the best known and most studied characters of his time. The Colombian Bibliography , composed by Paolo Emilio Taviani in the eighties of the 20th century, includes nine thousand titles. There are really many more. Above all, as a result of the commemoration of the Quincentennial, that number has almost doubled. Hundreds of scholars of inestimable value have investigated Columbus. Information, certainly, we do not lack. Dozens of contemporary authors, including excellent humanists and chroniclers who got to know him personally -including his own son Hernando- provide us with all kinds of details about his physical appearance, his ideas and his character. As if that were not enough, Columbus was also an indefatigable (and magnificent) writer. The collection of texts recently published by Consuelo Varela includes five hundred pages of undoubted Colombian authorship, some of them of exceptional importance, in which she tells us about her life, her adventures, her concerns and her findings. And yet, when we think we have reached a safe conclusion, new data or theses arise that call it into question. Dedicating a life as a researcher to deciphering the enigma of Columbus is an adventure with an outcome almost as uncertain as that of the first voyage in 1492. Nothing is more strange and disconcerting than the contrast between the Columbian enigmas and the categorical and definitive fact of their discovery.
