Overview

Do you remember in sights or sounds? For one family, the 1970s and 80s were filled with small moments in and around the farm that will never be forgotten. Waking to piano notes lilting from the music room and the sizzle of fresh eggs in the kitchen . . . scanning the horizon for a hint of rain or waiting for the first bean seedlings to pop through the soil . . . listening for the rumbling of tractors in spring or the gentle lowing of mama cows as they get their sunrise bucket of feed . . . tasting the bitter salt of sweat from hauling hay or the cooling breezes of a picnic under the trees . . . these everyday events in those simpler days seem more welcome than ever today. A labor of love for three siblings, The Stillmeadow Years: The Rhythm of Life on One Family Farm is a collection of family history, childhood memoirs, and biographical poetry that paint a picture of how a Midwestern family gave their all to one family farm. Warning: This book is not in any way related to the beloved Stillmeadow Farm series of books by another author.

Author Information

Heather Erickson enjoys writing and spending time with her son when not in a classroom. Earning a bachelor's degree in Early Childhood and Elementary Education from University of Missouri-St. Louis prepared her to begin teaching with primary students, mostly in multi-age classrooms. While earning a Masters in Education from University of Missouri-Columbia, she became intrigued with the concept of aliteracy, which led to new purpose as a teacher of at-risk students in alternative school programs. Tim Erickson enjoys working with cattle and horses with his family on their small farm in southwestern Missouri. By day, he is an Edward Jones Financial Advisor in Bolivar, Missouri, where he lives with his wife Nancy and two children. He has advanced degrees in Animal Science from the University of Missouri-Columbia. In his current and previous work at the University of Missouri and University of Wisconsin, he teaches daily, providing counsel and advice to people making major life decisions. His son Parker shares his love of sports and singing. Daughter Grace has been a leader in 4-H, FFA, and the Missouri Junior Simmental Association. She and her dad are in the process of continuing the Simmental cattle tradition, winning the 2017 Missouri State Fair Simmental heifer show and raising the Reserve Champion Bull of the 2018 show. Tim is committed to being a good father, husband and service to the community, keeping good fences and weed-free pastures, changing the oil and greasing the bearings on time, and dumping a bucket of feed to a gentle group of mama cows as the sun rises each morning. Laura Erickson Carter has owned and operated Carter Publishing Studio, Inc., a publication design and layout firm, since 1997, and she launched the publishing imprint Sweetspire Press in 2018. She is an avid gardener who spends much of her spare time maintaining an organic raised bed system she and her father share, overlooking a small lake on her parents' rural property. When not designing books and magazines or digging in the dirt, she enjoys cooking, singing, listening to music, reading, theater (especially plays written by daughter Emma Carter), and genealogy. She frequently hosts family gatherings and visiting friends in her central Missouri home, where she lives with her husband Jim and their two cats.
