OverviewThis is Volume I of the story of Claire Owen, a Rhodes scholar, studying history at Oriel College, Oxford. During a reunion at her family compound in Wellfleet, she discovers her grandfather Brian Owen's diary hidden in the secret compartment of an old trunk. Brian Owen had worked for the OSS during WWII and had been a decorated war hero - yet the circumstances surrounding his death had always been a bit mysterious. Claire is engaged to a young lawyer named Robert Sterling who is a rising associate at Sullivan and Cromwell. Sterling also works on assignment for the CIA. The Agency instructs him to retrieve the original journal and dissuade Claire from digging further. Both the CIA and MI6 monitor Claire closely, determined that the story told by Brian Owen's journal remain in the grave with him. The thing that both the CIA and MI6 are intent on covering up is that the operatives who were responsible for derailing Valkyrie were also involved in ODESSA, the secret SS organization created to help SS agents escape Nazi Germany. At the end of the Second World War the enemy shifted from the Nazis to the Soviet Union, intelligence agencies found themselves with all sorts of strange bedfellows. No one wanted these dark stories to surface now. MI6 goes so far as to kidnap Claire but she escapes and makes her way to Germany where she is able to complete her research. The diary provides a fascinating firsthand view of Operation Valkyrie. It turns out that Brian Owen was the OSS handler of Claus von Stauffenberg. As Claire reads the diary she realizes that something went terribly wrong. As she pieces things together, she comes to an unthinkable conclusion - that the United States government deliberately thwarted the German Army generals' assassination attempt on Adolf Hitler. Her grandfather was killed as part of the cover-up of U.S. involvement in Valkyrie and some other equally nefarious operations. The enormity of Claire's discovery has potentially explosive modern-day political implications, particularly in light of the growing pressure for transparency in U.S. intelligence agencies. As the historical evidence mounts supporting her conclusion, Claire struggles to tell the true story of her grandfather as dark forces close in around her.
