OverviewArchetypes in Literature: Study I The Mask and the Shadow Persona and Shadow as Archetypal Energies in Shakespearean Tragedy Shakespeare's tragedies often place their characters in moments where the roles they carry begin to fracture. Kings, generals and daughters appear certain of who they are, yet under pressure something less visible begins to move beneath the surface. This study reads four plays-Hamlet, Macbeth, Othello and King Lear-through the psychological tension between persona and shadow. Persona is the face shown to the world, the role through which a person participates in society. Shadow gathers what remains unspoken, resisted or pushed aside. As the plays unfold, the distance between these two forces narrows. Public identity begins to strain and what has been held outside awareness slowly enters the drama. Shakespeare's tragedies reveal how fragile the boundary can be between the self that is maintained and the deeper impulses that eventually claim their place within the story.
