OverviewExcerpt from The Juvenile Instructor, Vol. 21: An Illustrated Magazine Published Semi-Monthly; Designed Expressly for the Education and Elevation of the Young; February 15, 1886 From the same compilation of statistics the yield of wheat for 1875 was bushels, oats barley corn and potatoes In 1883, however, a care ful computation of the wheat crop showed that it had increased to or, that in eight years the yield had more than doubled. This was due largely to the introduction of 'dry farming, which produced large quantities of wheat on land which had before been considered value-less for agricultural purposes on account of the absence of water. Wheat is raised almost exclusively on these dry farms so that the same rate of increase would not be applicable to other grains. But there has been a great increase in all kinds of cereals in the past ten years and the amount may safely be placed at not less than one half greater than the above figures.
