Overview
In 1740, an Austrian infantry company more than two hundred strong arrives at the Prussian border. Their orders: to defend the town of Narutsin when war--inevitably--breaks out. But they don't get the warm welcome they're expecting. If anything, the locals seem strangely secretive, and the soldiers who previously garrisoned in the village have disappeared. Fearing the villagers may be consorting with the enemy, the commander orders his prim young lieutenant Klaes to investigate . . . On the outskirts of town, in a dilapidated manor known as Pokoj, the road-weary soldiers make their home for the winter. Accompanying them is Drozde, a camp follower and entertainer who possesses a very special talent: she can see and communicate with the dead. She's the only one who knows that the crumbling mansion is far from empty. It's teeming with ghosts--and they know her. Each spirit tells Drozde how they became a part of Pokoj's sprawling history, hinting at its future as well as its past. As she listens to their tales, it becomes apparent that the story of the manor hasn't yet ended--and that she and Klaes have their own parts to play in the horror that is to come . . .

"Linda Carey, writing as A. J. Lake, authored the Darkest Age fantasy trilogy. She has also written for TV, most notably for the German fantasy animation series Meadowlands. Mike Carey got into writing through comic books, where his horror/fantasy series Lucifer garnered numerous international awards and was nominated for five Eisners. He also wrote Hellblazer (now filmed as Constantine). From there he moved into novels and screenplays while still maintaining a presence in the comics world (he is currently writing two of Marvel's flagship titles, X-Men and Ultimate Fantastic Four). His movie Frost Flowers, an erotic ghost story, is currently in production with Hadaly/Bluestar Pictures. Mike lives in London, England, with his wife, Linda, and their three children. Louise Carey wrote ""The Diary of a London School Girl"" for the website of the London Metropolitan Archive. She also cowrote the graphic novel Confessions of a Blabbermouth with Mike Carey. Christa Lewis and her pseudonym Pippa Jayne have narrated 265 audiobooks between them. Christa is a conservatory trained actor with a smart and funny vibe who can also meet the moment in nonfiction thanks to a seventeen-year stint as a newsreader. Christa speaks accent-free German fluently and offers a variety of accents and dialects. Magically, there have been eight AudioFile Earphones Awards in nonfiction/biography and memoir, YA, and fiction-as well as a SOVAS Voice Arts Award, a Sultry Listeners Award, a Listeners Choice Award, and two Audie nominations."
