Author Information

John Howard Phillips John was born and raised in Central Kentucky. He is a graduate of Eastern Kentucky University with a Bachelors and a Masters Degree in Wildlife Management. He has worked as a stable hand, farm field hand, tax preparer, home renovator, park ranger, wildlife technician, land manager, conservation officer and wildlife biologist. As a wildlife biologist he rose through the ranks to become Deer and Elk Program Coordinator for the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. As program coordinator he developed new techniques for restoring deer to previously claimed unfit habitat. He restored an expatriated species (Elk) to Kentucky and successfully implemented a program to promote Kentucky's trophy deer population. His work took him throughout all of Kentucky's rural backwaters. His scientific publications include A Deer Population Model for Microcomputers, Published in the Proceedings of the Southeast Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies and Use of Wood Duck Boxes by Screech Owls in the Kentucky Warbler. He has written over one hundred scientific Federal aid reports, several brochures dealing with his former work and over one thousand letters to the public. He has received numerous awards for his work. He was awarded Biologist of the Year in 1998 by the Southeastern Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies and was awarded the Lauren Schaaf Memorial Award by the Kentucky Chapter of the Wildlife Society in 1999. Finally he was awarded the Pete Thompson Award by the EKU Chapter of the Kentucky Chapter of the Wildlife Society in 2000. He has spent over 37 years working, hunting, fishing and camping in the outdoors. He is an accomplished scuba diver and pilot and all around good guy. His background gives him intimate knowledge of the people, terrain, habitat, and hunting lifestyle seen in The Guns of Owen County. The Guns of Owen County is the first of two novels he has written and he is currently working on a third.
