OverviewIn the Congolese education system, French occupies a central place as the official language of instruction and assessment. Yet essay writing and writing skills are becoming increasingly difficult to master, for students and teachers alike. Many learners struggle to organize their ideas, argue and write coherently, accumulating grammatical and syntactical errors. In Kolwezi, in the province of Lualaba, as in several regions of Greater Katanga, the situation is particularly worrying. Many secondary school pupils, and even students, are unable to produce structured, relevant texts. The reasons for this are weak linguistic foundations, lack of a clear methodology, lack of reading, overloaded curricula and sometimes inadequate teacher training.Yet the essay remains an essential skill. It develops rigor, critical thinking and the ability to reflect, thus constituting a major challenge for academic success and the quality of education in the DRC.
