Yes, shrieked the invalid, you have known me all these years yet you have never once spoken to me of my soul's salvation, though you occupy a high position in the Christian Endeavor Society, and now, at the eleventh hour, when it is too late, you come here to make my last days more miserable than they already are. Oh, it is too bad -- too bad! and thoroughly exhausted the young man sank back among the pillows, and sobbed like a child. At the very beginning of this outbreak, Horace, scarcely less pale than his friend, began backing toward the door, out of which he slipped almost unnoticed, a sadder and a wiser man. Why had he not taken Gertie's advice?
