Author Information

Chao C. Chien spent most of his working career on the new human frontiers and futures, on the edge of mankind's new 'Age of Discoveries, ' the new horizons of space science and space exploration. As part of the same, Mr. Chien, an engineer and mathematician by training, has held a number of engineering positions, including as Senior Systems Analyst at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. There Mr. Chien participated in the Voyagers and Galileo Spacecraft Programs. Mr. Chien was born in China and spent his youth in Hong Kong. He grew up in a family steeped in history and scholarship. He began his academic training at Hong Kong's very British high school, Queen's College, where he obtained his first academic orientations. Subsequently, he attended and graduated from the University of Michigan's School of Engineering at Ann Arbor. Curious (and sceptical) by nature, Chien never stopped adding to his interests and horizons. For instance, he attended law school and MBA programs. In later years, drawing on his extensive backgrounds, Mr. Chien entered the academic teaching field. He has taught at various colleges, including Los Angeles City College. He also headed his own computer consulting firm. Professor Chien's personal life story is a bridge experience in a number of ways. At first a cultural child of the East, in his adult life he came to be shaped increasingly by the West. Though trained in the theories of natural sciences and mathematics, he applied his high-tech training and skills to a pursuit for the humanities, to explore issues of history and culture, especially focusing, critiquing, and writing on the gap of how history and culture are taught in the East and the West. Besides the present volume, he is the author of The Hunt for the Dragon, on the mystery of the missing Ming Dynasty Jianwen Emperor, In Search of Troy: An Unusual History Detective Story, and 2000 Years of World History, among other titles. Mr. Chien has long since become a U.S. citizen and currently resides in the USA
