The screens start sweating first. Rook Mercer is halfway through another dead-end overnight shift at a Tennessee gas station when the televisions begin to change. People repeat his words without thinking. Crowds gather around livestreams like church revivals. The whole country feels feverish, angry, and hungry for something ugly. .
