OverviewMr. Szymanski has 52 years' experience in space war policy, doctrine, strategy, surveillance, threat assessment, long-range strategic planning, & command and control. He has published/lectured over 200 times in Aviation Week, the United States, Canada, Britain, Scotland, Netherlands, Denmark, Belgium, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Greece, Georgia, Turkey, Poland, Estonia, Cyprus, Ukraine, India, Taiwan, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, and Japan. He has helped the United States fight space wars over this time period (11 space wars and ""incidents"") and participated in 12 different space weapons programs and 5 different satellite inspector programs. Many think he is the top world expert on this subject and the first original space mercenary, much like Boba Fett, since he has helped 25 allied countries around the world fight space wars. Since he skipped both his senior years of high school and college, and graduated with three college degrees at the age of 22, and soon began working at the Pentagon for the Secretary of the Air Force, he was always the youngest person in the room on these sensitive programs for many years. Subsequently, at age 74, he is now one of the last of the original space warfighters from the 1970's-1980's. The detailed appendices in this foundational book are meant to broaden the readers' perceptions concerning space warfare. They provide finer details and offer possible options for users of space battle management systems with decision-making algorithms. It is the author's hope that these lists of detailed space warfare planning elements will be a foundation for additional discussions by practitioners of the dark art of war in the shadows of deep space. They are based on translating Joint Publication 5-0 ""Joint Planning"" of how the United States fights terrestrial conflicts to the military space environment. Since the main job of outer space conflicts is to support terrestrial warfighters, it is important for space and terrestrial conflict planning to possess similar terminologies and planning structures. Table of ContentsReviews""Battle Beyond: Fighting and Winning the Coming War in Space, ' provides a superb foundation for the theory, doctrine, strategies, and tactics needed to deter -- and, if necessary, to fight and win space wars. Starting with the timeless observations of Sun Tzu, and building on US current military doctrine, this book provides powerful ""big ideas"" for operations in space. It includes thoughtful discussions on space principles of war, orbital choke points, linkages between the terrestrial and space conflict escalation ladder, space command and control, and strategic considerations for potential space warfare. Surprisingly, 'Battle Beyond' is also a great read that will be very valuable for both casual observers and professional space warfighters alike. General David Petraeus, US Army (Ret.), former Commander of the Surge in Iraq, US Central Command, and NATO and US Forces in Afghanistan, and former Director of the CIA. ""The Battle Beyond - Fighting and Winning the Coming War in Space"" provides novel insight into the unique complexities of the space domain and space warfare concepts. It illustrates the inherent complexity of the space domain and supports the need for deliberate resource allocation, training and operational concepts to ensure our future joint and combined arms operations are supported with robust space capability. Provides good perspective on the importance of preparing for War in Space. Timothy J Harp, Former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for C4ISR, IT, intelligence and space; and, US Mission to NATO Director, Brussels Belgium as a Board member on five major NATO standing boards and committees. ""The ""Battle Beyond"" is an impressive work that can inform our space warfighters, strategists, and planners at a very critical time in our participation in on-going complex, multi-domain operations in multiple theaters. The evolving great power struggles we see today demand thoughtful approaches to our National Defense and Security Strategies...Paul and Jerry provide that. Gene Renuart, General, United States Air Force, (ret.), former: Commander of NORAD - NORTHCOM; Senior Military Assistant to the Secretary of Defense; Director of Strategic Plans and Policy, The Joint Staff; Vice Commander of Pacific Air Forces. A terrific and necessary read for understanding all elements of deterring, fighting and winning in the Space Domain. Professional war fighters, put this on your shelf of must-reads. Highly recommended! Admiral Bill Gortney, United States Navy, (ret.), former: Commander of NORAD - NORTHCOM; Commander of US Fleet Forces Command; Director of The Joint Chiefs of Staff; Commander of US Fifth Fleet; and Commander of Carrier Strike Group Ten, Harry S. Truman Strike Group. Our warfighter needs every advantage in future wars when engaging our enemy and the U.S. needs every tool available to be win. The Battle Beyond provides a perspective of war fighting in the space domain. It should be required reading by anyone interested into future conflicts and military strategy to secure an advantage over the enemy. Rear Admiral Gregory J. Slavonic (ret.), former: Acting Under Secretary of the Navy; 18th Assistant Secretary of the Navy; Chief of Staff of U.S. Senator James Lankford and U.S. Congressman James Lankford; and, Director of Public Affairs, Multi-National Force - Iraq (MNF-I). The Battle Beyond: Fighting and Winning the Coming War in Space is an interesting read. It articulated relevance of space to the military practitioner and to war colleges. The authors' expertise shows, and the work put into the subject is enlightening and extensive. Charles Williams, Rear Admiral (ret.) United States Navy, former Assistant Secretary of the Navy.
