'Hilarious... well worth buying - and definitely worth half-inching' GQ

First came The Burglar Diaries, hailed among other things as the 'antidote' to Bridget Jones, and now comes this, the second in a series of laddish adventures. Opening with a brace of bank robberies - one of them so incompetent its success defies belief - this yobbish offering follows the exploits of the 'local faces', and how they're affected by the consequences of a 'single, solitary decision'. When ringleader Gavin gets put in prison for 15 years, the attention turns to his younger brother Chris, who manages to have plenty of money, a nice little getaway in Greece and a deeply unenviable life with a philandering minx called Debbie. Soon he and fellow gang members Sid and Vince become as leaderless as they are clueless, and their exploits degenerate accordingly. Brash as any number of London gangster films starring the likes of Vinnie Jones (you can almost hear the menacing yet chirpy cockney voiceover), there's something compelling about these odious geezers and babes and their dodgy dealings. And, despite the relentlessly in-your-face political incorrectness of it all, it's hard not to have a laugh at some of the sharper observations as King takes potshots at have-a-go-heroes, men who treat handshakes as opportunities for macho oneupmanship, dreadfully dull suburban neighbours and 'tankard drinkers'. Stylistically it's all very chatty, and can be best summed up by the author's brief acknowledgements, which manage to be simultaneously oafish and funny. If the language and general irreverence there come across as too much, then you'd probably be better off giving this book a wide berth. For those with a thick skin to withstand the flowery language, though, it rattles along entertainingly enough, and never purports to be anything else other than the writings of a man who is clearly enjoying himself.
