Overview

Age range 3 to 6 Elephant has an exceptionally long trunk and Hippopotamus never tires of telling him that 'That's not normal!'. A laugh-out-loud story about differences, acceptance, kindness and friendship. A White Ravens selection. Whether helping old monkey climb a tree or keeping Giraffe's neck warm on a cold day, Elephant is always ready to lend a hand, or rather a trunk...an exceptionally long trunk! An uplifting, fun story about individuality, self-acceptance and being yourself. 'A good anti-bullying story.' This Kid Reviews Books 'Well-plotted, beautifully illustrated with a beautiful message about embracing our differences. ....That's Not Normal has a lesson that every person, young or not-so-young needs to constantly hear to by happy in our everyday life.' Midwest Book Review 'Elephant is blue, animals move on two legs and talk to one another, and Zebra has removable stripes - all of which underlines the text's implied messages that normality is highly relative and it is not a good idea to ridicule those who are different.' Reviews

THAT'S NOT NORMAL has a some terrific messages while also being a fun story. I especially enjoyed the whimsical illustrations. Isn't the elephant on the cover absolutely adorable?....focuses on self-confidence and diversity by showing that being different is a strength, not a weakness. However, I also love how it teaches children about kindness. -- Booking Mama Well-plotted, beautifully illustrated with a beautiful message about embracing our differences. ....That's Not Normal has a lesson that every person, young or not-so-young needs to constantly hear to by happy in our everyday life. --Midwest Book Review Elephant is blue, animals move on two legs and talk to one another, and Zebra has removable stripes-all of which underlines the text's implied messages that normality is highly relative and it is not a good idea to ridicule those who are different. --Booklist A charming story for younger readers that makes clear in a clever way that there really isn't such a thing as normal, this choice is lovely. --Kendal Rautzhan, Books to Borrow, Books to Buy; nationally syndicated newspaper column A good anti-bullying story. -- This Kid Reviews Books
