OverviewPreviously, access to healthcare services was exclusive to social security contributors, with everyone else being treated only by charitable services. With the creation of the Unified Health System (SUS), which made public healthcare a duty of the State and a right of every citizen, the population gained the right to consult and treat diseases such as leprosy, an infectious, slow-progressing and chronic disease caused by Mycobacterium Leprae. It is easily diagnosed, treatable and curable. The diagnosis, treatment, monitoring, and control of this disease are offered free of charge by the SUS in Basic Health Units and Reference Units according to the needs of each case, ensuring equity and quality of services provided to the population. The main objective of this study is to describe the importance of the SUS and how it acts in the diagnosis, treatment and control of leprosy in Brazil, through a bibliographic review, constituting a descriptive, retrospective study of an indirect qualitative nature.
