The author makes it abundantly clear that his subject is definitely a Hot Topic! This book could well serve any curious reader as a first serious introduction to pathogenic bacteriology. The subject is thoroughly covered by means of an interesting narrative and telling illustrations. Three topics are often repeated for emphasis in the text: hand washing is the most effective personal measure to prevent bacterial (and viral) infections; antibiotics should be used only when necessary and the instructions for their use must be carefully followed; and antibiotics (except the antivirals) have no effect on viruses. The rationales behind those three major points are explained, often more than once, in the text. Topics such as unnecessary or careless antibiotic use, antibiotic use in animal agriculture, the development of microbial resistance to antibiotics, regulation, both national and international, of antibiotic use, the appearance of new strains of pathogenic bacteria, and many other issues are presented for the reader's consideration. Case studies are interspersed in the text to emphasize important issues. There is a quiz, a glossary, a short bibliography, a brief list of useful websites, and an index. It is sad, indeed, that this otherwise wonderful book is chock full of grammatical, spelling and factual errors, way too many to attempt to list here. If these defects could be remedied in a future edition, the book could serve a very useful purpose. As it stands now, teachers will be burdened with compiling a long list of corrections to the text. With these corrections in hand, students will be able to extract useful and important information from this admirable book. --J.
