This is an intelligent thriller, which reveals a bit of the underbelly of international crime and the people willing to roll up their sleeves to deal with it. As for the use of submarines by both the human/drug traffickers and the protagonists and their US government associates, due to insights the author may have as an ex Army intelligence officer some version of this may actually have happened. I also thoroughly enjoyed the witty banter between the ex army intelligence officer Mark Hampton and his superiors, his bother, and his targeted prey. Overall, Subterfuge is a gripping enterprise that weaves underworld conspiracy, bureaucratic bungling, romance, sleazy bureaucrats, and high seas adventure into a first class tale which leaves you hoping Mr. Hurst has several more up his sleeve. Daniel Kluepful, MD SUBTERFUGEblends espionage, crime, and romance into a distinct political intrigue. I was constantly kept guessing as a low-level U.S. Intelligence agent plied his trade while desperately striving to keep his personal love life intact. The story fairly balances female and male characters, which is unique for spy novels. From San Francisco to Paris, Barbados, and the South Pacific, I never lost interest in this feisty escapade. Semi-retired U.S. Army Intelligence Officer and anti-hero Mark Hampton reluctantly allows his political superiors to pluck him from a calm San Francisco Bay sailing scene and thrust him into an underworld-wide crime conspiracy. Recovering from the recent violent death of his wife and child, Mark's defining trait is a quiet intensity. You will easily draw close to him as you discern he is a soft-hearted romantic caught up in a treacherously dangerous occupation. The novel's narrator observes more than judges. Hurst's page-turner intrigued me with its twists and turns as it subtly penetrated my senses with its love story. Weaving affection, danger, and humor into the anxiety-ridden world we inhabit, Subterfuge packs an emotional punch all the way through to its convincing end. I'm anxiously waiting for Mark's next caper. Kathy Davis, private business owner. Author InformationTab Content 6Author Website:Countries AvailableAll regions |
