Overview'Since the early 1990s Bjarne Melgaard has produced exhibitions that are anything but light fare for the viewer. Before his recent exhibition Black Low: The Punk Movement was Just Hippies with Short Hair at the Herford Museum MARTa, the public prosecutor's office took steps to prohibit the show for its glorification of violence. Public debate was highly sensitised by a tragedy in Erfurt where a student had instigated a massacre at his high school.' Table of ContentsReviews'Themes of death, suicide, homosexual sado-masochism, escapism, subcultures, drug consumption and violence form a common thread throughout Melgaard's large-scale installations and exhibition scenarios, which are characterised by a chaos aesthetic. Photos, hand-written notes, and drawings are layered on top of each other. They are crudely pinned on the walls or lie around in piles in a confusing scope and atmospheric density. Sculptures and paintings are also included, usually accompanied by videos, music and performances. Everyday objects such as furniture, rugs or articles of clothing are sometimes also integrated into multi-layered room collages. Melgaard is often considered a visual storyteller who cannot be compartmentalised or labelled by catch phrases.'
