Block's customary sure-fire plotting, exemplary characterisation and a patent love of the Big Apple translate into a superb read. MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS This is a gripping, scary crime thriller set in the shadows of a city reeling from September 11. BRADFORD TELEGRAPH & ARGUS Block displays his first class technique of crime-writing in a thrilling tale set amongst the darkened back streets of the city that never sleeps. CARDIFF WESTERN MAIL Small Town is a hymn to New York and its inhabitants, following the events of 11 September. Humane and unsentimental, the novel shows how national tragedy intersects with individual lives. Block captures the current anxiety of New Yorkers, suggesting that anyone can become a killer. The plot is tight and includes some satisfying set pieces. It begins with the discovery of a woman's body: Marilyn Fairchild has been murdered and her cleaner unwittingly destroys all the evidence. The perpetrator seems to be serial killer William Harbinger, who, unhinged by the loss of his family on 11 September, has embarked on a killing spree. Harbinger's murders affect a disparate group of New Yorkers whose lives are detailed by Block. The novel develops as a thriller but it also eulogizes the city's new-found intimacy. Block's characters are complex and individual; they include charismatic cop Fran, sexually voracious art dealer Susan, Maury, a gifted lawyer living on borrowed time, and grizzled writer John Creighton. Particularly unusual is Block's empathy with the serial killer, whom he depicts with sensitivity, showing him as a man driven mad by grief. While Harbinger's violence is shown to be obscene, we understand its desperate logic. Block is Grand Master of the Mystery Writers of America, and his skill at unfolding a story reminds us why. With a deceptive economy of language he builds tension artfully towards an elegant conclusion. In the hands of a lesser writer, the subject could become crass, but this is a compelling, poignant and uncompromising novel that serves as a fitting tribute to post-atrocity New York.
