The notes, therefore, except in a few special cases, do not bear upon grammatical principles. They are for the most part lexicographic, special attention being given to the particle, which, with its subtle functions and delicate shades of meaning, may be considered as the very citadel of the spirit of the German Language, and which no writer uses more extensively and to greater advantage to the life and color of his style than Goethe, although it must be admitted that some of these particles are scarcely more than expletives, cupbonifcbe Bmifmentvfitter (as he calls them in a letter to Riemer with special reference to his autobiography), which here and there may be suppressed.
