Table of ContentsReviewsTom writes: Brian K Vaughan, acclaimed author of Y: The Last Man, Ex Machina and Runaways returns to comics with the epic new series Saga. Think the love child of Game of Thrones and Star Wars and you're headed in the right direction. Alana and Marko are lovers each on the wrong side of a never ending inter-galactic war. Marko's people wield magic and Alana's are born with wings and have vastky superior technology. Together they're on the run from both Empires and raising their newborn daughter Hazel. Their main pursuers are bounty hunter The Will and Prince Robot IV, a silver, humanoid robot with a television for a head. Fiona Staples' artwork is extraordinary, her line work is masterfull, and the colour palette is evocattive of the harsh realities of war all the while embracing the sci fi elements of the story. This duality is perfectly in keeping with the darkness of the book that also has its light hearted moments. These are most certainly weird and wacky concepts but as always, the true joy of any Brian K. Vaughan comic is his splendid dialogue. He has a knack for snappy one- liners like no other, well maybe Joss Whedon. The overall effect is that in spite of the high minded science fiction the story is grounded emotionally and these alien protaginists are "human" and relateable. Saga is an ambitious, beautiful comic book that may very well exceed Vaughan's already hefty accomplishments as a writer. I can't wait and neither should you! BOOKLIST (STARRED) -- Vaughan, writer of the hugely successful Y: The Last Man , isn't one to think small. In this opener to his ambitious new series, bits of sf space opera and classic fantasy mesh in setting a sprawling stage for an intensely personal story of two lovers, cleverly narrated by their newborn daughter. Though recently soldiers from opposite sides of a massive intergalactic war, moth-winged Alana and ram-horned Marko simply want peace and anonymity to raise their daughter (an abomination to the powers that be) away from conflict and hatred. Vaughan's whip-snap dialogue is as smart, cutting, and well timed as ever, and his characters are both familiar enough to acclimate easily to and deep enough to stay interested in as their relationships bend, break, and mend. While Vaughan will be the star power that attracts readers, do-it-all artist Staples is going to be the one who really wows them. Her character designs dish out some of the best aliens around, the immersive world-crafting is lushly detailed and deeply thought through, and the spacious layouts keep the focus squarely on the personal element, despite the chaotic cosmos they inhabit. Add another winner to Vaughan's stable of consistently epic, fresh, and endearing stories. Author InformationBrian K.
