Roots and Wings: Mindful Parenting in Recovery

Overview

Parenting is complicated, often really hard, and sometimes overwhelming. Here is a powerful resource to make it more understandable, more manageable, and more rewarding! Roots and Wings: Mindful Parenting in Recovery provides invaluable knowledge, awareness, and step-by-step guidance for more successful parenting, with special content for parents in recovery from addiction. Roots and Wings dives deep into the reality that quality parenting doesn't happen easily or by coincidence-it necessitates conscious awareness and intentional effort. Readers will find a deeper understanding of their own and their children's most important mental-emotional needs, as well as how to meet those needs. Parents will learn how to navigate the swirling storms of strong emotions that so often impair the ability to interact and communicate with their children in ways that are healthy and helpful; to talk with their kids so they will listen and listen such that their kids will become more comfortable talking to them. Roots and Wings: Mindful Parenting in Recovery presents a comprehensive yet user-friendly approach to attuned, skillful parenting grounded in the principles and practices of mindfulness and twelve-step-oriented recovery, along with elements of psychological/developmental theory, contemporary counseling approaches, and a touch of neuroscience. It is the only book on parenting oriented toward parents in addiction recovery. While there are specific sections for parents in recovery from addiction, most of this invaluable information and guidance is applicable for all parents. Roots and Wings provides a treasure trove of invaluable evidence-based information along with easy to follow step-by-step guidance on specific practices and actions to enhance the quality of their parenting, as well as their own mental and emotional well-being. With chapters divided into short clearly identifiable subsections, readers of Roots and Wings will benefit from being able to conveniently return to specific sections as needed, based on their interests and evolving parenting challenges. Roots and Wings will be of great benefit to anyone who wants to learn how to develop the awareness and skills to become a better and more successful parent. The practical user-friendly guidance this book provides will help people-whether or not they are in recovery-become the parents they want to be and the parents their children need.

Reviews

""Roots and Wings is one of those rare, beautiful books that will teach and touch you. Exploring the difficult and meaningful work of parenting, it brings together so many insightful and useful ideas from solid research and psychological theory in the areas of attachment, human development, mindfulness, addiction, and recovery. With his down-to-earth style and wry wit, Dan Mager poignantly reflects on his own parenting journey and invites us all to join him in facing ourselves in order to do and be better."" Jennifer Kunst, PhD, Clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst and author of Wisdom from the Couch ""Roots and Wings is one of the best books on parenting I've read. This is remarkable because it's technically a book about parenting while in recovery from addiction. Based on personal experience, Dan Mager describes how the self-knowledge and skills gained through recovery can dramatically improve your parenting skills and how being a parent can be a tremendous aid to recovery. I love how practical the book is. In it, you'll find a broad range of helpful tools-from easy-to-learn mindfulness practices, to the invaluable parenting skill of ""active listening,"" to learning to understand your child at different stages of their development. Don't pass up this gem of a book. It gets my highest recommendation."" Toni Bernhard, Author of How to Wake Up, How to Be Sick, and How to Live Well with Chronic Pain and Illness ""Roots and Wings is truly a precious gift to all parents in recovery. Dan Mager skillfully unlocks the wisdom teachings of recovery and mindfulness to provide readers with authentic, practical, and accessible tools to create a healthy, healing, and nurturing environment for parents and their children to flourish."" John Bruna, Mindfulness and dharma teacher, cofounder of the Mindful Life Program, and author of The Wisdom of a Meaningful Life ""This is a powerful book that every parent needs to read! Deep understanding and compassion for the complexities of parenting permeate Dan Mager's comprehensive approach on how to integrate mindfulness into the raising of a child. Roots and Wings is both incredibly practical and spiritual at the same time."" Claudia Black, PhD, Clinical architect of the Claudia Black Young Adult Center at The Meadows and author of It Will Never Happen to Me and Unspoken Legacy
