OverviewIn his landscape paintings, Dutch artist Robert Zandvliet succeeds in bringing the stark contrasts between expressionism and analytic abstraction to a surprising synthesis. The shapes and lines, created by broad swings of the brush, turn into landscapes of abstract arabesques of form, colour and light. In the paintings, there is a sweeping movement of form, while those movements are, at the same time, deliberately condensed into austere contours. Through experience, Zandvliet has arrived at an impressive linking of two principles that have been regarded as being in conflict in modern art for many years. The small paintings featured in Zoom In serve as preliminary studies for his large canvasses, but, more recently, they have taken on qualities of their own with colours that run together, blotches and splatters.
