OverviewSpanish playwright. Joaqu n Dicenta began his studies in the school of the Piarists of Getafe, near Madrid. Anticlerical and adversary of the established social order, he lived a disordered bohemian existence. He began his literary activities with the publication of poems in Eden, a popular newspaper; later he extended his work to other newspapers.Author of sketches, short stories and novels today fallen into oblivion, he also wrote dramas in verse and prose and zarzuelas for theatre. The drama Juan Jos (1895), of socialist tone and founded on the existing differences between employers and workers, reached a great success; during many years it was the work more represented in Spain in the popular celebrations of the First of May, because of its net polemical atmosphere and related to the social struggle. The work was condemned by some Spanish bishops. Translated into several languages, it also made a great fortune in other countries.
