OverviewThis book stems from an observation drawn from our experience as secondary school teachers in Senegal. That observation is that pupils' standard of French is declining and remains low. What are the causes of this decline in both written and spoken French? To what extent are the various stakeholders within the school system responsible? What avenues for reflection can be identified to address this sharp decline? These are the questions this book has sought to answer through an analysis of the Senegalese environment for the teaching and learning of French. The chosen approach-a quantitative study based on questionnaires, combined with a qualitative approach-highlights the multitude of challenges and dynamics at the heart of the issue of teaching and learning French in Senegal. The book develops a didactic approach to the teaching of the French language and its use by learners. Its conclusions offer avenues for reflection towards a more resilient school system and the appropriate use of the French language within the school setting.
