He earned his Ph.D at Wayne State University, where he was an award-winning instructor. He has also been acting chair of the public relations interest group in the Central States Communication Association. Dr. Sowa recently concluded his term as president of the Central Illinois Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America, of which he is also a member.
