OverviewOptical Science and Engineering explores the fundamental principles and advanced topics within the field of optical science and engineering. Designed to bridge the gap between foundational theory and modern techniques, this book provides a comprehensive introduction to essential concepts, alongside practical applications. It integrates extensive numerical examples – primarily using MATLAB – to illustrate key theoretical principles, ensuring a hands-on approach to learning. Features: Covers core topics such as geometrical optics, wave interference, electromagnetic optics, ra-diometry and photometry/colorimetry fundamentals, scalar diffraction in the Rayleigh-Som-merfeld, Fresnel and Fraunhofer regimes, Fourier Optics, vector diffraction and introduction of photonic crystals Introduces advanced numerical electromagnetic methods, including Finite-Difference Frequency-Domain (FDFD), Boundary Element Method (BEM), and Rigorous Coupled-Wave Analysis (RCWA) Provides step-by-step MATLAB examples to enhance understanding and application of theoretical concepts Includes appendices for each chapter with supplementary material for deeper exploration and clarification of key topics This textbook is an essential resource for undergraduate and graduate students studying optics, as well as engineers and researchers seeking a deeper understanding of optical science and engineering. With its blend of theoretical insights and computational examples, it serves as both a foundational learning tool and a practical reference for those working in academia and industry.
