OverviewOur research focused on 'the nutritional value of fly larvae (maggots) produced from biomass for the utilisation of household waste in the diet of insectivorous animals'. The fly maggot samples were reared and harvested from rubbish bin waste divided into two groups: the first comprising household waste or random samples, and the second comprising a mixture of waste with a well-known proportion and well-known biochemical composition (meat, fish and avocado substrates), the gradual degradation of which we monitored in order to determine the biomass and nutritional values. For analysis, we used the Kjeldahl method for proteins, phosphorus, total ash and mineral salts; and the Soxhlet extraction method for lipids. The biomass results, expressed in grams of maggots per 1 kg of waste, are as follows: for household waste (random samples), the figures are 49.455 g/kg and 61.26 g/kg; and for the follow-up waste (Sites III, IV and V), the figures are 6.83 g/kg, 2.26 g/kg and 3.067 g/kg. For the remainder, see page V.
