Excerpt from Notes on Permanent-Way Material, Platelaying and Points and Crossings A few tables follow. Those which specially apply to the old and new standard crossings in use on Indian State Railways were worked out by me when I was Assistant Superintendent Way and Works, north-western Railway, and, prefaced by a few simple rules, were circulated among all engineers and inspectors on that line. I wish to say, however, that my object has been, not so much to put ready-made figures at the disposal of the reader, as to indicate the simplest way of working out for himself any problem which may occur. I regret that I cannot even attempt to give a list of the books which I have consulted, and from which, as I readily acknowledge, I have derived a great deal, either absolutely or in confirmation of my own experience. Engineers in India can only carry about with them a few standard books of reference them are no libraries of professional works within easy reach and all that we can do is to lend and borrow such few books as we have. This little book has been written at scattered intervals of leisure, but I can only plead this as a partial excuse for its unequal treatment of the subject and lack of completeness.
