A former Commonwealth scholar, he has held professorships and honorary professorships in the UK, USA and Australia. He has won a National Book Council award and awards, grants and fellowships from such organizations as the British Academy, NSW Ministry for the Arts, Arts and Humanities Research Council, Mutter Library, the European Commission and the Institute of Medical Humanities at the University of Texas.
