Navarasa The Colors of Life: A Poetry Collection with Rasa Theory Analysis

Overview

Navarasa The Colors of Life is a carefully curated collection of 21 unique poems designed to explore and expand upon the framework of the nine human emotions known as rasas: Shringara (love), Veera (valor), Karuna (compassion), Adbhuta (amazement), Hasya (humor), Bhayanaka (fear), Bibhatsa (disgust), Raudra (anger), and Shanta (peace). This book sets itself apart from other collections as it also provides an analysis of the poetry. In addition to being a collection of poems, this book goes a step beyond and treats each poem as a creative case study of the human experience. Every poem is crafted as a moral guide, exploring deep emotions to provoke reader introspection that lingers far beyond the end of the poem. After the poems are presented, each is deconstructed in depth using the classical Indian rasa theory that is rooted in the Natya Shastra - a treatise on the arts by Bharata Muni. This book is ideal for lovers of poetry and scholars of Indian aesthetics alike as it illuminates how ancient dramatic theory applies to the modern world.

Reviews

""What truly distinguishes this collection is its remarkable analytical layer. Roopa Modha does not merely present poetry-she deconstructs it through the lens of Indian Rasa Theory derived from the Natya Shastra of Bharata Muni. This elevates the book from an artistic expression into a scholarly exploration of emotion, aesthetics, and consciousness. Each poem becomes a ""creative case study"" of human experience, allowing readers to not only feel the emotions but also intellectually understand how and why those emotions resonate. This fusion of literature and classical theory creates a bridge between modern poetic expression and ancient Indian wisdom... Structured like the human emotional journey... This gradual movement from emotional chaos to transcendence reflects the very essence of human growth. The sequencing feels intentional, cinematic, and spiritually layered, making the collection feel less like isolated poems and more like one continuous emotional pilgrimage... Roopa Modha's writing style is lyrical yet accessible, philosophical yet emotionally grounded... This collection leaves readers with not only admiration for the craft of poetry, but also a renewed appreciation for the emotional depth that defines human existence. Team JJ Crowns Magazine considers this book a soulful literary experience that resonates with both the heart and the intellect."" - JJ Crowns, May 2026
