Mayo Clinic Guide to Gut Health: Restore your microbiome, enhance digestion, and improve your health from the inside out

Overview

A comprehensive guide to understanding your gut, its influence on your health and what you can do to protect it. Digestion may be its primary job, but your gut is pulling double duty behind the scenes. Sometimes referred to as the body's 'second brain', your gut plays an important role in everything from immunity and brain function to metabolism and skin health. Within your gut resides a bustling community of trillions of microorganisms working 24/7 to fight off harmful invaders, create essential nutrients and keep your body running like a well-oiled machine. When this delicate ecosystem, known as the gut microbiome, is thrown off balance, it can trigger a range of health issues. Mayo Clinic Guide to Gut Health is an expert-driven resource from Mayo Clinic gastroenterologists that explores everything you need to know to take control of digestive issues. Inside, you'll find information on: The gut microbiome and what it means to your everyday health How your gut talks to your brain and influences other body systems Ways to protect your gut and keep it healthy How supplements and medicines can affect the gut What researchers are learning about environmental dangers and your gut The gut's surprising role in metabolism and weight gain Digestive cancers and the latest efforts to try to prevent them How to manage several common digestive diseases and disorders including IBS, food intolerances, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, celiac disease, GERD, peptic ulcers, heartburn, diarrhea, constipation and more
