I myself incline to the opinions of those who think that the people of Germany were infected by no marriages with those of other nations, but have existed as a peculiar and pure race, and like to itself only. 2. Whence also the form of their bodies, although in so great a number of men, the same in all; fierce and blue eyes, red hair, large bodies, and powerful chiefly in sudden-exertion; not the same endurance of toil and labor, and by no means able-to-bear thirst and heat; cold and hunger they have been accustomed to by their climate and soil. 3. The land, although it varies somewhat in aspect, is nevertheless everywhere either dismal with forests, or deformed by marshes: more moist where it looks towards the Gauls, more windy where it faces Noricum and Pannonia. 4. Rather fertile, unfavorable for fruit-bearing trees; abounding in cattle, but for the most part of small kind; nor even in the oxen their beauty or defiance of countenance; they boast of the number, and these form their only and most esteemed wealth.
